About

Now in its sixth edition, 3hd 2020 will act as a queer-feminist biotope created by Creamcake. "UNHUMANITY" deals with a system of human and non-human forces, built around an interconnected habitat of art, music, performance, digital culture, and its relationship to the more opaque idea of Nature Herself. The festival’s program is an expression of a transition between an untenable past and an uncertain future, while recognizing natural and technological actors as equal partners, and bringing its audience closer to a new model for an interspecies community.

In an era of climate change and pandemic, 3hd 2020 will implement a decentralized and dislocated festival structure across different locations around the globe. Los Angeles, Milan, and the woods of Norway, are just some of the nodes in the neural network of the extended ECO-centers organism, branching out from its usual base in Berlin. While there will still be events at HAU Hebbel am Ufer and Gallery at Körnerpark from November 3 to 7, Creamcake will commence their multidimensional program, online and IRL, starting on August 20 and running to January next year.

3hd 2020: UNHUMANITY
August 15, 2020 – January 31, 2021
Berlin

Los Angeles, Milan, and the woods of Norway, are just some of the nodes in the neural network of the extended “ECO-centers” organism, branching out from its usual base in Berlin. While there will still be events at HAU Hebbel am Ufer and Gallery at Körnerpark from November 3 to 7, 3hd 2020 will kick off its multidimensional program with Annamaria Ajmone and Felicity Mangan’s “LUGLIO” performance, and a DJ set by Jessica Ekomane on August 15. The presentation at Berlin’s Schloss Biesdorf, continues the duo’s extemporaneous reworkings of the private dialogue between a dancer and a sound artist. Responding to the resident bat colony of the enchanted park surrounding the neoclassical-style palace, Ajmone and Mangan hold and remodel the morphing psychographic and immediate landscape surrounding them.

Other participants—including Lars TCF Holdhus, Isabel Lewis, DJ Paypal, Huntrezz, Rory Pilgrim, Jenna Sutela—will consider and observe new modes of multispecies communication and notions of care for non-human forms, through performances, concerts, film screenings, audio and visual field recordings, VR worlds, live online sessions, DJ sets, workshops. In redefining our relationship with nature, they will seek innovative ways of exploring the environment. That said, the thematic focus of "UNHUMANITY" lies in social-ecological change, metamorphosis, and morphing, as well as questions of time and perception, (cyber)space and sustainability.

3hd’s "UNHUMANITY" program is more practically a direct response to the state of emergency and solidarity caused by the economic and political fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is currently affecting every aspect of life—not mentioning the festival planning process. It’s a situation that has led Creamcake to rethink its own infrastructure, goals and objectives, giving us the chance to rewire the way we work with the artists and collaborators, formats and institutions within our existing network. The entanglement of on- and offline interactions that were always a big part of how we operate, will be rerouted and dispersed geographically into the many local communities across an international map of truly interdisciplinary thinking and thinkers.

Since our community can’t convene in Berlin as usual, we’ve built out this year’s 3hd website to become a decentralized map of events, along with our concurrent “Symbiotic Agencies” group exhibition, running to January 31, 2021. Creamcake will facilitate artists and scenes within their regions, to reflect on the mobility and sustainability of a festival format in a post-pandemic world. In connecting both remotely and physically with invited  partners in even more unique and innovative ways, 3hd 2020’s “UNHUMANITY” edition brings our global locus of queer ecofeminists together again, even if it won’t be together in ‘person’.
