manuel arturo abreu

manuel arturo abreu is a Dominican poet/artist from the Bronx. Receiving their BA in Linguistics from Reed College, 2014, they use what is at hand in a process of magical thinking with attention to ritual aspects of aesthetics. abreu is the author of two books of poetry—“List of Consonants” and “transtrender”—and one book of critical art writing, “Incalculable Loss”. They compose club-feasible worship music as Tabor Dark and also co-facilitate home school, a free pop-up art school in Portland, currently in its fourth year of curriculum and in residency at the city’s Yale Union for 2019.

Recent projects in the US include ones at Los Angeles’ AA|LA Gallery, SOIL and Veronica in Seattle, PSU’s AB Lobby Gallery and Open Signal Portland Community Media Center in Portland, as well as Harlem’s Studio Museum, MoMA, MoMA PS1, Rhizome and the New Museum in New York. Internationally, abrue has worked with Dublin’s NCAD Gallery, Geneva’s Centre d'Art Contemporain, Madrid’s Yaby, and Sydney’s Critical Path.
