Pol Merchan

Born in Lleida, Spain and based in Berlin, Pol Merchan is an artist and filmmaker who uses photography and moving image to problematize themes of gender identity and manipulated bodies. His experimental and non-narrative audio-visual work explores filmic semantics by deconstructing the techniques of conventional filmmaking. Merchan’s 2018 hybrid short film ‘Pirate Boys’ reflects on writer and punk poet Kathy Acker’s writing and a seminal portrait of her taken by photographer Del LaGrace Volcano.

Merchan obtained a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona and an MA in Art in Context from the Berlin University of Arts. His work has been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums around Europe, including Madrid, Barcelona, Vilnius and Berlin, as well as at a number of international film festivals. like Hot Docs, International Queer Film Festival Lisboa and New York Queer Experimental Film Festival MIX NYC among others.
