Akinola Davies Jr.


Akinola Davies Jr. work is situated between West Africa and the UK, as he identifies as a member of the global diaspora situated within the margins of being part of both worlds. The multi-disciplined filmmaker, writer and video artist delicately navigates the collision of colonial and imperial tradition, whilst advocating a return to indigenous narratives. He explores themes of community, race, spirituality, identity, and gender, telling the stories that bridge the gap between traditional and millennial communities, while drawing from aspects of collective, individual memory, and lived experience.

Davies Jr.’s narrative short film Lizard premiered at Sundance, where it won the Grand Jury Prize, going on to win the Blackstar Film Festival Short Film Award, and nomination for the BAFTA for Best British Short Film in 2021. Named one of Screen Daily’s “Stars of Tomorrow” and selected for the Berlinale Talents in 2020, he is also known for directing music videos for artists such as Blood Orange, Klein, Kate Tempest, and Farai.
