Ai Weiwei
Born in Beijing and based in Berlin, Ai Weiwei is renowned for making strong and timely aesthetic statements that resonate with phenomena occurring across today’s geopolitical world. The current Einstein Visiting Professor at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) is a recipient of Amnesty International’s the Ambassador of Conscience Award and the Human Rights Foundation’s Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent.
From architecture to installations, social media to documentaries, Ai uses a wide range of media as an expression of new ways for his audiences to examine society and its values. Recent exhibitions include Ai Weiwei: Life Cycle at Los Angeles’ Marciano Art Foundation, Fan-Tan at Marseille’s Mucem, and Good Fences Make Good Neighbors with the Public Art Fund in New York City, as well as others in Buenos Aires, Istanbul, Washington D.C., Jerusalem and Prague. Ai premiered his first feature-length documentary, Human Flow, at the 74th Venice Film Festival.
