XHOIR Group Singing Workshop

XHOIR by Colin Self / Workshop

Led by Berlin-based American artist, performer and choreographer Colin Self, Xhoir is a non-utilitarian vocal workshop focused on alternative modalities of group singing. Rooted in somatic research and experimentation, the goal of the project is to foster a generative environment for individuals to connect with voice and vocality on an individual and collective level. Xhoir is open to anyone interested in exploring their voice as a tool for learning or re-posturing a new relationship to singing and listening.

GOALS:
To foster a generative environment outside binaries and formalities for participants to connect with the individual and collective voice.
To create social and political inquiry around the implications of the voice and singing.
To provide a platform for trained and untrained vocalists to learn and experiment together.
To generate dialogue around the voice as an instrument of change.

HOW IT WORKS:
Twenty-five participants will be selected to attend Colin Self’s XHOIR workshop during 3hd Festival at HAU Hebbel am Ufer on November 24, 4-6pm.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
Somewhere between medieval and punk, this hands-on event will explore multiple entry points to group singing, providing a non-judgemental space for engaging in communal vocalisation by breaking down the barriers often associated with ideas of ‘correct’ or ‘acceptable’ forms of expression. Rooted in somatic research and experimentalism, these exercises examine the physicality of the voice, cognitive relationships, and active listening as a tool in community engagement.

HOW TO APPLY:
Prior participation in choral or vocal practices is not required, but any experience with listening and engaging experimentally in a musical or studio practice is encouraged. Participants will be selected on review of all applications.
Xhoir encourages queer and POC individuals to apply.
